Steel, shaped while it glows.

Forge Technical Solutions is a Vancouver forge. We move hot steel with hammer and anvil, and we forge decorative ironwork — scrolls, leaves, twists and collars — for homes, gardens and buildings.

Read the heat

A smith judges temperature by colour. Pick a colour to see what the steel is ready for.

Orange: the main shaping heat. Drawing out, tapering and bending with full control.

Colours as seen in shade. Figures are approximate and for mild steel.

Two kinds of work, one fire

Taming red-hot steel

Hot forging changes the shape of metal while it is soft with heat. The steel is drawn out, tapered, bent, upset and punched on the anvil, then brought back to the fire before it stiffens.

This is the work for parts that must be shaped rather than cut: tapered bars, bent brackets, forged ends, collars and custom pieces to your drawing.

Artistic forging

Artistic forging uses the same heat to make elegant patterns and decorative elements. Bars become scrolls, leaves, twists, baskets and finials — each one shaped by hand, so no two are quite alike.

These elements can stand alone or come together as a larger piece such as a railing panel, a gate or a screen.

What we forge

Every piece is made to order. Tell us where it will live and how it will be used, and we will propose sizes, patterns and a finish.

  • Railings and balustrades

Stair, balcony and landing railings with forged pickets, twists and scroll panels.

  • Gates and fences

Garden, driveway and courtyard gates with decorative infill and forged tops.

  • Decorative elements

Scrolls, leaves, rosettes, collars, baskets and finials — supplied as single elements or sets.

  • Hardware

Hinges, handles, latches, hooks and brackets forged to match a door, gate or cabinet.

  • Interior pieces

Fireplace screens and tools, candle holders, wall pieces and small furniture frames.

  • Forged parts to drawing

Custom hot-forged parts made from your sketch, sample or technical drawing.

How a job runs

  1. You describe the piece

Send us the location, rough sizes and any photos or sketches you like. Measurements can be refined later.

  2. We draw it

We come back with a drawing, the materials we suggest and a quote. Nothing is forged until you approve it.

  3. We forge it

The steel is heated, shaped and joined by hand, element by element, then assembled and checked against the drawing.

  4. We finish it

The piece is cleaned and given the finish we agreed, whether indoors or out, and made ready for handover.
